The Open Society Foundations, founded by George Soros, are the world’s largest private funder of independent groups working for rights, equity, and justice.
George Soros, the founder of the Open Society Foundations, began his philanthropic work in 1979, funding scholarships for Black African university students in South Africa and for East European dissidents to study in the West.
Every year, the Open Society Foundations give grants to groups and individuals that work on the issues we focus on – promoting justice, equity, human rights, and democratic practice. We also engage in impact investing and support strategic litigation, while engaging directly with governments and policymakers through advocacy to advance positive change.
The Open Society Foundations give grants to a diverse array of groups and who work in different ways to promote democratic practice, human rights, equity, and justice. We support this work at both national and global levels through advocacy in our own name, as well as through impact investing and legal action.
About Our Awarded Grants
The Open Society Foundations award grants, scholarships, and fellowships throughout the year to organizations and individuals whose work advances open society values. The Open Society Foundations are organized as a network of foundations and related entities, all dedicated to a common mission.
This database includes grants awarded from 2016 through 2023. While we strive to present as complete a picture as possible of our grant making, we omit grants and modified descriptions under some circumstances, including where it is necessary to comply with personal data protection laws, and when disclosure may put at risk the safety or work of a grantee or the Open Society Foundations. Some of our national and regional foundations manage their grant making with local systems; those grants are not reflected in this database, but are often published on the individual websites of those foundations. We encourage you to visit those sites for more information.
